Gildardo Chicunque has been growing coffee for 15 years, but has spent his whole life around it. He grew up poor, and when he was 8 years old he dropped out of to work has been working as a coffee picker, which he spent 30 years doing all across Colombia, saving money to one day own his own farm. Later in life, having collected a wide assortment of coffee from farmers across Colombia, he returned home to El Tablon. There, he raised his seedlings but didn’t have any farmland so it was primarily as a hobby.
El Tablon de Gomez was actively occupied by FARC at the time, so the price of land was dropping. Against his family’s advice he ended up buying 10 hectares of farmland, even though he couldn’t even enter the farm due to the danger.
In 2004, the safety of the area was finally established and coffee cultivation was started, and the quality improved year by year in cooperation with a local export company. Gildardo’s passion for coffee is described as overwhelming, and he treats his crop very carefully, paying close attention to cultivation, harvesting, and drying.
