Over 10 years ago, right around the time the first Variety opened, TechnoServe (an international nonprofit that promotes business solutions to poverty in the developing world by linking people to information, capital and markets) gifted Duromina, in the Agaro region of Western Ethiopia, with brand-new coffee processing equipment. This took the region, previously known for producing very low-quality natural coffees, and vaulted it to the forefront of quality, allowing them to showcase the inherent beauty and wild flavors found in the heirloom varietals of Duromina. With stellar leadership under the Kata Muduga Cooperative and impeccable quality control, these coffees have only gotten better year after year. We at Variety are pleased to have worked with these coffees for most of the last decade. This is thanks to our relationship with Aleco Chigounis of Red Fox Coffee Importers, who has enjoyed a long and substantial relationship with Asnake and Efrem, Kata Muduga’s leaders. They generously afford Red Fox first right to lot selection. On top of that, with mighty effort from their strategic trade partners in Addis, Red Fox is able to ship these lots first, so that they enter the country as pristine as when they left and with even more time to shine.
Ethiopia is our "Desert Island" origin, the epitome of what we at Variety love about coffee. Duromina sings with flavors of Ranier Cherry, Donut Peach, Prosseco, and Wild Honey. Tropical complex, bright and sweet, lingering and delicate, it's a marvel to taste and just a glimpse of what's to come this year as we plan to roll out many more Ethiopian jammers in the months to come.
