Description

Peru is a pillar of our sourcing program at Variety, and we are proud to present the amazing work of the Rio Blanco producer group for a fourth consecutive season. These lots present profiles that remind us of our favorite Colombian coffees, with a complex brightness, layers of fruit notes, and distinctive structure to balance. Our forth lot in this series comes from Jose Antero Montalvan Jimenez, whose coffees we've enjoyed every year since the beginning of our relationship with the farmers of Cajamarca and Piura. Dried fruits dominate the profile, supported by creamy milk chocolate and a hint of toasted almond in a very sweet finish.

Background

Rio Blanco is a new producer group led by Ismael Alarcon and sixteen other farmers located on the banks of the Rio Blanco river in Tabacones Namballe National Sanctuary. Ismael organized Rio Blanco focusing on helping smallholder producers get the best possible price for coffee through quality improvements. Several community projects have been implemented, such as developing organic fertilizers utilizing local materials and empowering producers through offering land management practices. Long term sustainability offers a path to long term profitability for small holders.

Jose is one of our top producer partners in this area. Born in the coffee producing town of Pueblo Libre. He’s been cultivating coffee all his life. The farm encompasses 1.5 hectares, all dedicated to coffee and subsistence crops like bananas and yucca for his family’s daily usage. He intersperses Caturra and Bourbon varieties among shade trees include Albizia and Pacay. After processing, he loads parchment onto mules to be delivered to the nearest access road. The name of his farm "El Naranjo" is because when he first bought the land there were a large amount of orange trees in the area, providing isolated shade for the coffee and a pleasant snack for pickers during the harvest.
